Indoor Winter Fun
When the north wind blows and fluffy white snow covers our backyard, outdoor play is nixed by this frigophobic Mema. Instead, my grandsons and I find ourselves discovering new ways to amuse ourselves in the warmth of our cozy playroom.
We build forts, climb through tunnels, don our super hero capes and jump off tall skyscrapers. (Which to the untrained eye may only appear to be ordinary storage containers.) In a large bowl, I’ve brought real snow indoors to squish between our fingers and even rolled up mismatched socks to use as snowballs.
The goal is to have fun while learning!
For quite some time now, almost 5 year old Joey has loved to count. We count all kinds of things. Beads, books, Little People. We count out one scoop of dog food in each of two bowls for Bella and Gracy. We count seven scoops of ground coffee to make Mema a much needed fresh pot mid-morning.
Recently, he began adding numbers together.
Mema, two plus two equals four.
Four plus four equals eight.
Five plus five equals ten.
What does ten plus ten equals*?
Ten plus ten equals twenty, Joey.
What does twenty plus twenty equals*?
Twenty plus twenty makes forty.
On and on we go. Eighty, one hundred sixty.
One hundred and sixty plus one hundred and sixty equals three hundred and twenty, baby.
Wow! Mema, that’s a huge number!
Yes Joey, it is a huge number, I replied. Grateful that he was ready to stop a little before I couldn’t cipher off the top of my head anymore.
He keeps me on my toes that little one and now apparently I’m going to have to brush up on my math skills.

They are so lucky to have such a great Mema!!! Wish my boys still had their amazing Grandma!!
Thanks Lisa. I’m enjoying them in ways I never thought were possible.
My mom takes care of our son when we’re at work and this sounds exactly like a day in her life. It’s a good reminder of how thankful I need to be.
We have another on the way, so are looking to cut Grandma’s time in half and find a part-time nanny. I just can’t imagine anyone giving him the kind of love, attention, and brain workout that he gets with his Grandma!
