Chicago Getaway: Crystal Mountain Resort and Spa

When I first received an invitation to a family gathering that was going to be taking place outside of Traverse City, Michigan, my first reaction was “it is going to be such a loooong drive with the kids”.  I was so focused on the car ride, that I did not spend any time researching were we were going. I thought we were going to “some hotel” in northern Michigan.

Boy, was I wrong.

A few hours into our surprisingly short road trip, I decided to look into where we were going. It wasn’t just “some hotel”…it was Crystal Mountain Resort & Spa…one of the most magical places I have ever traveled with my family and now one of my favorite places in Michigan.

Around 90 minutes before we arrived at the resort, I decided to call the Director of Public Relations to see if there was anything new or extra interesting to do there (great fodder I thought for a blog post). Not too many things exceed my expectations (since I usually have high expectations) but the Director of Public Relations and our vacation at Crystal Mountain Resort & Spa FAR EXCEEDED MY EXPECTATIONS.

If you have never been there I highly recommend you check it out for a fun four-day weekend getaway. You can do it in three days, but it’s SO MUCH FUN there, I recommend staying for four days. You can check out all of their Summer Events here.

Day 1: We arrived around 6pm Friday night and headed straight to Wild Tomato Restaurant. It has everything we needed for my family. My hubby and I shared fish tacos and my kids were happy with chicken fingers & fries. We ordered two kids meals, but they were so big, my boys could have shared one order.
After we unloaded our luggage in our spacious Hamlet room, we headed towards the ski slopes where my boys unleashed all of their energy by running up and down the slopes. It was a perfect way for them to burn off energy after sitting in the car during the day.

Day 2: We woke up to a fine misty rain, but that did not stop us from having an amazing day. My oldest son actually woke up sick, so I stayed with him in the room and my hubby and little one headed to breakfast at Wild Tomato Restaurant. Since it was still raining, they then went swimming at the resort’s indoor pool. After handmade pizza lunch from the Little Betsie Bistro, the sun came out and we heading to Michigan’s only alpine slide. It was little piece of heaven. We took the chairlift to the top of the mountain (which we all loved) and then raced down the 250-foot-high, 1,600-foot-long curved tracks.
I suggest watching this hands-on video to truly understanding the alpine slide experience.

After alpine sliding we spent the rest of the afternoon and evening with family in the beautiful Crystal Center. It was modern with log cabin ambiance – a perfect combination!

Day 3:
We were supposed to leave on day 3, but my oldest son was still not feeling 100% better. To my surprise, the PR director of Crystal Mountain offered to give us a complimentary cottage at Water’s Edge. We are grateful and excited to have the opportunity to experience a two bedroom bungalow that overlooked a small pond and streams. We loved the screened-in porch, living room, dining area, fireplace, and whirlpool tub. THANK YOU Crystal Mountain!

So while the amazing staff at Crystal Mountain moved our luggage into the cottage, we headed to the child friendly water park – Park at Water’s Edge.

This was a perfect water park for my young family. The Crystal Mountain website refers to it as “ a one-acre, outdoor water playground that provides a splashing good time for kids of all ages looking to frolic in the northern Michigan summer sun. The highlight of this water park is the 4,200 square-foot pool, which offers a water playground structure sure to keep the giggles rolling for hours.” I have to agree, we literally played and giggled for hours! After the water park at lunch at the Beach House, my sister-in-law and I headed to the Crystal Spa. It was DIVINE!  Decorated in the art and natural beauty of northern Michigan, it was an oasis from life itself. I have a 25 minute massage and then my sister-in-law and I spent hours lounging in the relaxation lounge and meditation garden. It was so relaxing that we both unwound into deep slumbering naps.

Day 4: No one in my family wanted to leave. My kids were literally begging me to let them stay one more day. It was with a sad heart that we packed up the car.

So, why was Crystal Mountain Resort & Spa so amazing? Because it was luxury with a rustic feel. It was kid friendly with perfect mom Me Time escapes. It was modern yet filled with hiking trails and nature. It had everything my family was looking for in a summer vacation.

We were sad to leave and will most definitely be back!

Thank you Crystal Mountain for the services and accommodations you provided to my family.
