Football Widow? Not Me!

| November 13, 2011 | Comments (4)

It’s all in the packaging.

Now, don’t get all “But women love football, too” on me…I get that!  Some of my best girl friends are football fans.  And, I have nothing against football.  Many of my fondest childhood memories involve going to Bears games with my Dad. (um…go Bears!)

I’m just saying, it’s about the perception. If you aren’t “into” football, do you think of yourself as a “football widow” or do you see the beauty in orchestrating your own Sunday activities?

Sundays are a big deal for me.  It’s the last day of the weekend.  A day to sleep a bit later than usual.  A day of pancakes and hot tea.  A day of fires crackling in the fireplace. A day of amazing warm smells emanating from the kitchen.  A day that is reserved for family.

As I type this, pre-game chatter is keeping my Sweetness company in the family room.  And, for me, it’s Nirvana.  I amSO past the “Oh no…not another football game” rhetoric. I look at football Sunday as a gift. I can do my thing and Sweetness can do his. As a matter of fact…keep the games coming. Don’t get me wrong… I love, love, LOVE hanging with Sweetness as often as possible but, you know, a woman’s gotta have her time. And I don’t mean at the grocery store or in front of the washing machine. I mean T.I.M.E. time…without expectations and commitments. Precious time. Even if it’s only for a few hours on a Sunday…a time to do what you want to do. Watch a romantic comedy, catch up on the 20 books floating inside of your Kindle, write emails, scribble a few words together for your blog…or just sleep!

I am NOT a football widow. Au contraire girlfriend. I adore Sundays and the peace that Sweetness’s shouting and coaching aimed at the TV brings to me.

So…me?  Come game time today, I am going to go curl up on the sofa with my Kindle and enjoy my temporary Nirvana!

Do you think of yourself as a football widow? How do you spend game time?

I actually love football season – however, I can NOT watch football all day. Usually on Sundays, or Mondays, or Thursdays (ha!) you can find me listening to my husband yell at the television, either in glee, or in hatred, from my office while tweeting, facebooking or blogging. It’s become our Sunday ritual. Church, home, football, dinner. Even our children are used to him and his cheers – or jeers. The running joke around here is that he primed the children while I was still pregnant with them, that way they don’t get startled when he screams.

I love my Sundays too. However, I will go fully on record to say that I hate basketball season. Vehemently.

Hi Natasha…thanks for your kind comment! I SO hear you about the yelling at the television. I’ve come to actually enjoy that sound…it’s kind of a warm fuzzy and let’s me know all’s right with the world ;-) Every once in awhile, I will go check in on the score or what is going on, but for the most part, I just continue enjoying my Sunday time (and you are right…it is WAY more than Sundays now!)
      And… duly noted…Natasha hates basketball ;-)
      Thanks again,
      Claudia

  2. I think that’s a GREAT perspective!! I am personally watching and often yelling louder than hubby. But I also understand that sometimes I want or need to be doing something else on a Sunday that I need help with so hours of football CAN be frustrating. I think when i no longer have toddlers, it may feel a little different but I DO understand a mom who isn’t getting ME time but more mommy time because Dad is glued to the TV and has the ability to block on WWIII going on right next to him.

Hi Lisa…thanks for stopping by and commenting! I love that you really get into the football game and that you sometimes are more vocal than your husband!! That is so cool! But, it IS hard, when we want some time for ourselves and the game seems to take precedence and we still have to do all of the juggling that we do so well. Toddlers do make it a little more of a challenge to step away for that “ME” moment, don’t they? I laughed when I read that Dad can block WWIII going on right next to him…a perfect example of selective hearing ;-)
      Thanks again Lisa!
