CHICAGO meet Barbara Byrd-Bennett, CEO of CPS

Chicago, meet your new CEO of Chicago Public Schools Barbara Byrd-Bennett. Byrd-Bennett moves from her April 2012 appointment as Chief Education Advisor to fill in for Jean-Claude Brizard who has stepped down.

Byrd-Bennett has a lifetime of experience in education. Her 12 years as a New York public school educator, 8 as principal in a PBS documented Harlem school, and superintendent at New York’s third-largest district , Crown Heights in Brooklyn has equipped her to handle the state of education here in Chicago.

Ms. Byrd-Bennett stabilized Cleveland’s School District and also served in D.C. and Detroit in critical roles that overhauled many difficulties that were faced.

She sits on numerous boards including Common Core, U.S. Dept. of Education National Assessment Governing Board, Nat’l Board of Professional Teaching Standards and is also an appointed chair to the American Federation of Teachers Innovation Fund.

She holds a Master’s of Science from Pace University, Master’s in Arts from New York University, Bachelor’s of the Arts from Long Island University and honorary doctorates from Cleveland State University, Baldwin-Wallace College, John Carroll University, and the University of Notre Dame.

Ms. Byrd-Bennett is married, has one daughter and twin grandsons according to her bio.

We at The Chicago Moms thank her for her informative outreaches during the CTU Strike. We also welcome her to her new position as we look forward to spirited, insightful exchanges and loads of progress for Chicago’s students. Ms. Byrd-Bennett ┬áis moving “forward” as she so graciously stated today in the City Of Chicago Press Conference. Her appearance today was straightforward and no-nonsense. Chicago students are very lucky to have her here.
