Snow City Arts & Lurie Children’s Hospital

At Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, a great many “guests” miss significant amounts of school because of their need for treatment. “Snow City Arts turns this time to heal into a time to learn.”

Snow City Arts is made up many real working artists who partner with children in hospitals in and around the Chicago area. These artists work directly with the kids during their hospital stay on projects such as music, singing, writing, painting and photography. And sometimes the artists learn right along with the children to be able to bring a child’s particular interest and talent to being a finished work of art. Like Dan Kerr-Hobert, whom you can meet in my video interview; he spoke of learning video 3D modeling to make a project with a patient.

“I like it when Snow City Arts come, because I’m not bored.” – A young hospital guest.

One of the things I loved about Snow City Arts was that kids can get school credits for their work with the artists, and each completed project that the kids record, paint or write may go into a curated art show. Many of the kids go home (yeah!) before their art project is done and it is up to the artist to keep the project safe until, heaven forbid, the child returns for more treatments or care at Lurie Children’s Hospital. Some kid’s project have gone on for years.

“What unusual about Snow City is that it’s educational and many kids are getting credits for the work they are doing here.” MEd, CCLS Rush University Children’s Hospital

I hope you’ll meet Dan Kerr-Hobert , a Theatre Artist-In-Residence, and Jonathan Kerr, Visual Artist-in-Residence, both at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital. I also got to interview Sadia Uqaili, Director of Artistic Programs. She’s also the curator of Snow City Arts, and her own work artwork has been exhibited in Chicago, Karachi, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Phoenix, and Quebec.

“I’ve seen Snow City Arts make such a big difference in kid’s lives.” RN –Lurie Children’s Hospital.

Meet Dan, Jonathan and Sadia and check out the art done by Snow City Arts kids and listen to The Pirate Princess Song by Kaylee W., age 7. Young Patients Learn to be Budding Artists!
