CGI in Chicago

IMG_5249The last three years Chicago has hosted CGI or Clinton Global Initiative. CGI is part of the Clinton Foundation and it convenes global leaders and creates opportunities to implement innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges. It was established in 2011 by President Bill Clinton to address economic recovery in the United States. Since its first meeting, there have been more than 200 commitments valued at $13.4 billion when fully funded and completed.

The past two days have been eye-opening AGAIN, as The Chicago Moms were able to attend and witness as Former Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton announced she is now active with CGI and The Clinton Foundation has been renamed The Bill, Hillary & Chelsea Clinton Foundation.

Chicago was the inaugural meeting site, with J.B. Pritzker as the first supporter. It was a great surprise that for the second year, Mr. Pritzker actually popped in the Working session for Early Childhood Education.

The plenary sessions were filled with the brightest of the brightest.

One of the many highlights was the Press Conference of Mayors. Last CGI June 2012, a handful of mayors looked at possibly replicating the Chicago Infrastructure Trust. This trust raises capital from private investors for large-scale projects that are too expensive for public funds.

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter approached Mayor Rahm Emanuel to chair after realizing creating and funding the Chicago trust. Mayor Emanuel asked President Clinton to co-lead the effort via CGI and now 16 cities are participating in getting things done without the bureaucracy of the federal government.

Once again, CGI brought together the private sector, non-profit and government to take the major needs of the U.S. to task and next year will report the results. Next CGI? Denver, Colorado!
