Chicago’s West Side Welcomes UniverSOUL Circus

Caribbean_Festival2_BHFor years, I listened as my south side friends gushed on and on about UniverSOUL circus that religiously took place in Washington Park, and for years I consistently missed out on all the action.

This year, the critically acclaimed circus, celebrating 19 years, decided to trek over to the city’s west side in Union Park on Ashland and Washington Blvd. My family was invited out to participate in the festivities. I didn’t really know what to expect, but am I glad that we went!

If you are a first timer, there are a couple of things that you need to know:

This circus is under the big top, one ring, and interactive. The crowd sits around the circus ring and are able to enjoy the show from any view. We had front center seats, and really enjoyed ourselves.

There is a LOT of music, and dancing, and singing. With songs from jazz greats, hip hop artists, and even gospel thrown in for good measure, they run the gamut in soulful music, and really touch in a genre that EVERYONE can appreciate.

The circus gives you a great show for your money. Seriously. It started at 6:30 pm, and we didn’t leave until a little after 9:00 pm. Just so you know, there was action in every piece of that circus, including the intermission which allowed elephant rides for an extra fee, which we didn’t partake in.

I’ve been to several shows, and this one will be on our yearly family list of things to do. Every child of mine enjoyed the show, and I have four. My husband even had a great time! I will say though, that my twins (who are two) did seem to get a little bit restless at the less colorful parts of the show – and the audience participation, because, well, they didn’t get it. So I ended up dancing with them in the aisle.

For me and my family, this show gets a 4 out of 5 stars, and I will definitely be going back the next time it comes to Chicago.

If you’re interested in going, they will be performing nine more shows ¬†at Union Park until October 20th, and tickets can be purchased on their site at or at their ticket booth right outside of the tent.
