The museums participating are the Adler Planetarium, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Chicago History Museum, the DuSable Museum of African-American History, the Field Museum, Lincoln Park Zoo, The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, the Museum of Science & Industry, the National Museum of Mexican Art, the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts & Culture, the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum and the Shedd Aquarium. Each museum is offering discounts admissions, special exhibits, giveaways and more. There are so many different opportunities, so I’ll just highlight three museums here to give you a flavor of the family-friendly events taking place.

Lincoln Park’s Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum is known for it’s butterfly haven. During Chicago Museum Week, guests will be able to visit for free on October 1 and receive discounted $5 off adult admission with a receipt from another Chicago Week Museum. In addition, guests can participate in the grand opening of Peanuts…Naturally, a new exhibit exploring nature through the eyes of beloved cartoon characters on October 3. From 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. October 3, artist Hector Duarte will lead workshops on creating butterfly masks.

In Humboldt Park, the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts & Culture has free admission for everyone. Special exhibits include a solo exhibition by Puerto Rican Chicago-based artist Oscar Luis Martinez and a group exhibition of contemporary interventions on vejigante masks.

The DuSable Museum of African American History, located near the University of Chicago, offers 2 for 1 admission and 1/2 off individual memberships. Special guided tours of the museum will illustrate the African American experience throughout history. Located in a gorgeous building, the DuSable Museum is the first museum of its type in the US.

When you live in a city with so many cultural opportunities, it is easy to forget that these are important, living institutions. Chicago Museum Week is a reminder that we should take advantage of our cultural riches and experience something new as often as possible. The discounts and special exhibits offered during Chicago Museum Week give everyone a reason to put this special event on their calendars.
