Odysseo by Cavalia has created quite a buzz since pitching the White Big Top in the Soldier Field parking lot several months ago. The $30 million extravaganza the world’s largest touring production, with a cast including 48 riders, dancers, aerialists, acrobats, stilt walkers and musicians, and 65 majestic horses taking the center stage, creates a magical world with something for everyone to enjoy.
We attended the press opening night with our horse-obsessed, twin, teen-age daughters. They were fascinated by the horses and riders. If the show just featured the horses, our girls would have been content. The wonder of Odysseo is that it contains “mindboggling theatrical effects as spectacular as they are numerous: a state-of-the-art video screen three times the size of the world’s largest cinema screens; a three-story mountain for dazzling perspectives; décor both intricate and grandiose that seems to pull the audience onto the gigantic stage, and a real lake made of 40,000 gallons of recycled water which magically appears for a splashing finale.” At every turn the theatrical effects take you to places that bring your childhood dreams to life.
In addition to the equestrian arts, there are wonderful human performances. The African acrobats flipped and turned and danced to thunderous applause. The life-size merry-go-round showcased some of the most amazing acrobats we’ve ever seen. They performed at the merry-go-round moved in circles. Several moves seems like strength showcases as acrobats held their bodies parallel with the ground. The silk dancers floated above the stage performing awe-inspiring acrobatic moves.
When the show was over, everyone stood up and cheered. The audience couldn’t stop talking about their favorite parts of the show as we all walked out of the Big White Tent. As you might expect from a show as layered and interesting at Odysseo, there were so many opinions about the favorite performance. Everyone agreed, though, that the horses were the stars. I know our girls couldn’t stop talking about the stunt riding and horse exhibitions.
