As You Like It is a wonderful summer event

AYLI 4First Folio Theatre is known for its interesting and well-performed productions at the Mayslake Peabody Estate. Every summer the company moves outside to perform under the stars. It is a glorious way to spend a summer evening with family and friends.

This year, As You Like It, is the summer season show. Shakespeare’s fun rom-com takes the audience through an adventure with a large cast filled with actors who look like they are having the time of their lives. The plot takes the twists and turns you’d expect in a Shakespeare play. There are family squabbles, love-sick young people, banished royals and comedic foils.

The story starts with two brothers battling over their father’s legacy. When one leaves the family estate, Orland ends up in the royal court in a less-than-royal position. While there, he falls in love with Rosalind, who is at court simply as her cousin Celia’s companion. After another family battle, Rosalind and Celia end up in the forest. While trying to find new lives, they discover what is really important to them and end up in complicated love triangles.

What’s great about this timeless story is that the actors seem to be having more fun on stage than Shakespeare probably envisioned. They use the outdoor setting as an additional stage prop, running up and down the stairs and across the grass as they move from scene to scene. At one point Orlando jumps from the stage into the audience. The guests sitting in the front row became scene extras, much to their delight.

The audience arrives at the Mayslake Peabody Estate with chairs, blankets, picnic baskets and beverages. They are ready for a fun evening, extending each party from those who came with them to the other audience members. It’s really a relaxing, community event for all attending.

If you forget something, there is a concession stand with beverages and treats. In addition, First Folio Theatre provides lots of bug spray in a nod to the realities of a Chicago summer evening. Guests took advantage of the bug spray before the show and during intermission.

As You Like It runs through August 20. It’s a fun way to introduce your kids to both Shakespeare and outdoor performances. The show runs Wednesday – Sunday, beginning at 8:15 p.m. First Folio Theatre is conveniently located in Oak Brook, close to I-290.
