Screen Shot 2017-08-09 at 8.50.15 PMThe Shedd Aquarium recently introduced a new 4-D Experience® film based upon the PBS KIDS series Splash and Bubbles. Powered by ComEd, everyone’s favorite sea creatures come to life with music and fun in a 12-minute film.

According to the Shedd Aquarium, “this new adventure uses groundbreaking digital proprietary technology to allow kids to have fun while learning about the marine world and getting them excited about ocean conservation. Created by John Tartaglia (“ImaginOcean,” “Johnny and the Sprites”), Splash and Bubbles is designed to encourage kids to explore the natural undersea world, and focuses on themes of diversity, individuality, interconnectedness and the celebration of learning and discovery. The series also introduces the concepts of ecological balance and the importance of taking care of the ocean.”

The 4D film follows the story of Splash (an adventurous yellowback fusilier) and Bubbles (a colorful mandarin dragonet) as they help their friend Dunk (a nervous pufferfish) on his search for his lost lucky pebble. They each use their particular skills as they travel through ocean wonders like the kelp forest, a whale migration, and even an active underwater volcano.

The 4-D theater experience incorporates sights, scents, sounds and touch to completely immerse the audience into the film. The best part of the Splash & Bubbles 4-D Undersea Adventure is the addition of bubbles. At random times, the audience sees bubbles flowing throughout the theater. It’s the 4-D elements that attract the most audience attention. As the bubbles floated over the audience, kids took off their 3-D glasses to pop the bubbles. They giggled and squealed when they realized that the bubbles were real.

After wandering through the galleries to see the Amazon Rising, Waters of the World and At Home on the Great Lakes exhibits, it was nice to relax with Splash & Bubbles. It’s a fun and funny way to bring to life some of the exhibit creatures. Small children might not realize the importance of each creature in our larger eco-system, but they do understand how important it is for Splash, Bubbles, Dunk and others in their world to work together and depend upon each other. It’s a nice break for little ones and their parents with a larger message the kids probably don’t even realize they are learning.

The Shedd Aquarium has several 4-D films targeting different age groups. Splash & Bubbles 4D Undersea Adventure is a great addition to the Shedd Aquarium entertainment options. For more information, visit http://www.sheddaquarium.org/.
