IMG_7542After being closed to the public 26 years, The Auditorium Theatre re-opened nearly 50 years ago, October 31, 2967.  On November 12th the celebration will commence with a special evening of dance. Decades of fine performances have graced its halls. One such spectacular event was legendary soprano Kathleen Battle’s debut.

The program on September 30th, Underground Railroad: A Spiritual Journey, featured the five-time Grammy award winner and opera singer. The entire evening was a breath of new life into spirituals inspired by the Underground Railroad, the secret passages that helped bring slaves to freedom during the 19th century.

Ms. Battle was accompanied by a hand-picked group of Chicago’s choir singers. Led by Jonita Lattimore, adjunct professor at Roosevelt University’s Chicago College of the Performing Arts, the evening was warm, funny, and as enjoyable as a night at a sprawling estate with good friends.

The program included  Joel Martin on piano, Reverend Dr. Otis Moss III who narrated alongside Jackie Taylor, several legendary, historical quotes. The Chicago Freedom Singers were brilliantly showcased by Ms. Battle who often led and was gracious in encouraging solos.

Ms. Battle’s entrance, Lord, How Come Me Here was full and memorable. Hush, Wade in the Water, Mary Had A Baby and of course Swing Low, Sweet Chariot were just a few of the classically and beautifully chosen selections.

Graced with a few encores as well, the evening was one for the books.
